Reading USGS water gauges: elevation vs. gage height

The United States Geological Survey runs thousands of stream and lake gauges, and nearly all of them publish one of two very different numbers: gage height (parameter 00065) or lake/reservoir elevation (00062). They both come in feet, they both move up and down — but they answer different questions.

Gage height: depth above a reference point

Gage height is the height of the water surface above an arbitrary datum established at the gauge — often the sensor itself or a historical low-water mark. It is not the depth of the lake and not the lake's altitude above sea level. Its absolute value is nearly meaningless to a boater; what matters is the trend and the local knowledge of what number means "ramp unusable."

If your lake reports gage height, learn two personal benchmarks: the reading on a day you know the ramp worked, and the reading on a day it didn't. Gauges reporting gage height fluctuate quickly with rain and dam releases — a two-foot rise overnight can mean floating debris and current where you expected neither.

Reservoir elevation: altitude above sea level

Western reservoirs typically report surface elevation in feet above sea level (NAVD88 or NGVD29). This number is directly comparable across years and seasons — "Lake Mead at 1,045 ft" means something concrete to the agencies that manage ramps. Multi-year elevation declines are the signature of drought, and on big western lakes, each few feet of drop closes another launch ramp.

Elevation data updates as infrequently as hourly or as often as every 15 minutes, and ice season gaps are normal in northern states. A gauge that has not reported in days in January is usually frozen, not broken.

Using levels with wind

Water level and wind compound each other at the ramp. A falling level plus a strong onshore breeze makes steep, tired waves at the launch; a falling level plus offshore wind exposes mudflats you have to trailer across.
