GFS vs HRRR vs ICON: which forecast to trust on a lake

The wind number on your phone is an opinion — a model's best simulation of the atmosphere, discretized onto a grid. Two apps disagreeing by 8 knots is not one of them being wrong; it is two models, two grids, two philosophies. Knowing which model shines when makes you a better forecaster than any single app.

The big three

GFS (Global Forecast System, NOAA) is the American global model: coarse grid (~13–27 km), runs four times a day, decent at large-scale patterns days out, but blind to lake-breeze circulations smaller than its grid cells. ICON (German weather service) is the other global workhorse, similar resolution, often sharper on frontal timing in North America than its reputation suggests.

HRRR (High-Resolution Rapid Refresh, NOAA) is the lake sailor's friend: a 3-km grid updating every hour, explicitly modeling terrain, coastlines, and — critically — lake breezes and gusts. Its weakness is range: it only goes out ~18–48 hours, and beyond that you are back on the globals.

The practical playbook

Days 3–7: trust the globals (GFS/ICON) for the pattern — is there a gradient wind at all, is a front coming — and ignore exact numbers. Day 2: start comparing models; if they agree within a couple of knots, confidence is high. Today: trust HRRR, especially for the timing of the afternoon fill-in, gust magnitudes, and thunderstorm initiation. Disagreement between HRRR and the globals on a summer afternoon at a big lake usually means the globals missed the lake breeze.
